With a history of jaw-dropping concept reveals at Italy’s Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este, BMW will once again use the event to preview its all-new 8 Series at the end of May.
The brand has issued a single teaser image ahead of the concourse event, which although basic reveals a long bonnet, cab-rearward stance, BMW’s ‘Hofmeister kick’ window line, and a light-catching rear wheel arch detail reminiscent of the original 8’s boxed rear quarter panel bulge.
Hints of intricate LED, or possibly OLED, lighting detail front and rear can be seen, and a prominent integrated ducktail rear end, as per the current 6 Series
BMW has hinted previously that it is investigating options for an expansion of its top-end range range with a new high-class offering in direct response to increased demand for flagship luxury vehicles in China, USA and the Middle East.
BMW's chairman of the board of management, Harald Kruger, said "The BMW 8 Series Coupe will build on our tradition of luxurious sports coupes and add a genuine dream car to our line-up – a slice of pure automotive fascination."
Along with a revived 8 Series coupe, BMW is also expected to introduce a new 8 Series convertible for the first time, pitting the new model range squarely against the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe and Cabriolet ranges.
BMW has previously shown what a big-budget gran turismo coupe might look like in 2013 with the Pininfarina-designed Gran Lusso concept, the design which is expected to carry over into some elements of the 8 Series.
BMW may choose September’s Frankfurt Motor Show to reveal a production-ready version of the 8 Series which is expected to go on sale in 2018.
