Is there such a thing as too big? If you ask BMW, the answer will probably be a resounding nein

Not long after the German automaker announced that it will be launching the X7 SUV later in the decade, auto mag Auto Motor und Sport reports that BMW is busy prepping a 9 Series superlimo concept for a debut at the Auto China show later this month.

And while it will be strictly a concept, the 9 Series will preview the design of the next-generation 7 Series, which is expected to break cover in 2015.

The BMW Gran Lusso Concept pictured gives some clues about the new concept's design, though the two-door Gran Lusso is more akin to a modern reinterpretation of the long-departed 8 Series.

According to the report, the 9 Series could also make its way into production as an ultra-luxurious flagship positioned above the long wheelbase version of the 7 Series limousine. Its platform is also expected to be shared with the new 7 Series as well as the next iteration of the Rolls Royce Phantom

With the 760Li already a formidable flagship for the BMW brand, is there really space above it for an even bigger model?

With a new generation of ultra-rich oligarchs cropping up in Asia and Russia perhaps there is, but odds are a production version of the 9 Series won't appear anytime before 2016.
