BMW is again rumoured to be considering a comeback for its luxury 8 Series coupe, eyeing off a 2020 launch date.
That’s the word from Automobile Mag, which reports BMW is keen to ensure it has an alternative to the S-Class from Mercedes-Benz in both coupe and cabrio form in its fleet.
The carmaker’s rumoured 9 Series is now said to be on the backburner, as BMW looks to the simpler option of altering its existing 7 Series - rather than go all-out with a tech-laden and uber-expensive new model.
BMW’s CLAR platform will reportedly underpin the new 8 Series before it goes into retirement which could rule out an all-electric 8 Series variant.
Instead, plug-in hybrid models may join six- and eight-cylinder models, along with diesel options, and a petrol V12 would be a likely starter to mirror the S-Class models from Benz.
A four-door coupe (Gran Coupe in BMW-speak) is said to be off the table to give the 7 Series sedan some breathing space, and the report predicts the existing and smaller 6 Series Gran Coupe is not long for this world.
Instead, BMW may apply the Gran Coupe badge to a 5 Series GT and a 2 Series Gran Coupe may follow in the wheel-tracks of the 2 Series Active Tourer using the same platform.
BMW is yet to confirm any of these rumours, and the carmaker has seen more than a few ‘confirmed’ reports that a new 8 Series is on the way since the model was retired in 2000.
Model-names ranging from 825 to 850 have been reserved, including 850M and M8, but BMW may simply be reserving these names to prevent others from ‘borrowing’ them. The revived 8 Series is reportedly known as “G14/G15” to company insiders.
Whether the carmaker is or isn’t in the process of reviving the 8 Series badge remains to be seen, but it’s fair to say BMW has mirrored its German counterparts in Mercedes and Audi over recent years by plugging gaps in its model line-up.
