BMW has recalled its luxury 7 Series range this week, due to a potential problem with the vehicle’s airbags.

The German carmaker has identified a problem with the airbag control unit housing, which may contain small metallic particles stuck to the inside.

BMW says excessive acceleration or other forces, such as during a collision, may cause the metal fragments to break free, causing a short circuit.

This may, in turn, cause the airbag system to reset, which could rendering it less effective if required during a collision.

Airbags working at a less-than-optimum level could pose a hazard to the vehicle occupants, but BMW reports no such incidents in Australia.

A total of 168 vehicles are included in the recall, sold between October and December last year.

BMW has already begun contacting affected owners, but any owner wishing to learn more about the latest round of recalls should contact their local dealer or phone BMW on 1800 813 299.
