BMW is readying yet another niche-busting variation of its new 3 and 4 Series family, as these recent spy shots reveal.

Expected to be branded 4 Series Gran Coupe, the model pictured is essentially a cross between the 3 Series sedan and the new 4 Series coupe, showcasing a more swooping roofline that extends further into the bootlid.

More dramatic front and rear styling is also expected, and these photos suggest lighting at both ends will extend further into the bodyside.

The model will join the recently revealed 4 Series family, alongside the jacked-up X4 crossover. On the '3' side of the fence, there's also the new 3 Series Gran Turismo five-door hatch.

BMW plans to bring that strategy even further downscale, with the expansion of the 1 Series range - including front-wheel-drive models in the future - and the upcoming 2 Series coupe and cabrio models.

In the meantime, the 4 Series Gran Coupe is not expected until sometime in 2014, after the regular Coupe makes its Australian debut (due later this year).
