The coming four-door coupe version of BMW's new 4 Series range has been spied again, this time in the form of leaked patent renderings in the Chinese press.

Debuting as a sleeker alternative to the 3 Series, the new model - expected to be called 4 Series Gran Coupe - combined a coupe-like profile with the practicality of a four-door layout.

These latest images confirm that the look of the new sedan will stay close to the 4 Series Coupe, just as the 6 Series Gran Coupe borrows much of its coupe sibling's design.

The model will join the recently revealed 4 Series family, alongside the jacked-up X4 crossover. On the '3' side of the fence, there's also the new 3 Series Gran Turismo five-door hatch.

BMW plans to bring that strategy even further downscale, with the expansion of the 1 Series range - including front-wheel-drive models in the future - and the upcoming 2 Series coupe and cabrio models.

The 4 Series Gran Coupe is not expected until sometime in 2014, but the new 4 Series Coupe is available in Australia right now.

Lastly, we can also look forward to the new M4 hero making its sales debut in the coming year, likely followed by convertible and Gran Coupe versions.
