Is this the so-called BMW 2 Series Convertible? Not officially, no. This rendering is the work of Brazilian 'photochop' wizard Auto Projeções. But perhaps this is somewhere close to what we might see in the next year or so.

It's unclear at this stage if BMW's new small convertible will continue with the familiar 1 Series name, with recent reports suggesting that a new 2 Series badge will soon debut.

According to the reports, BMW is preparing to move Coupe and Convertible versions of its 1 Series to the 2 Series range, while the larger 3 Series two-door models would become the new 4 Series.

If a 2 Series range is on the way, it is possible that BMW will endow the new models with their own unique styling - so don't look too hard at this nearly identical 1 Series Convertible rendering.

While it might look different, the 2 is likely to share many of its engines and transmissions with the 1 Series.

That will mean a choice of six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmissions, coupled to force-fed 2.0 litre fours in petrol or diesel flavours, and varying states of tune.

A successor to the wildly popular 1 Series M Coupe is also rumoured, and BMW is understood to have registered the 'M2' trademark in the US.

BMW has also recently launched its new M135i hatch flagship, meaning that M235i models could appear in the 2 Series range.
