Bentley's new 'entry-level' V8 engine is expected to debut in Detroit next month, buried under the bonnet of the recently-updated Continental GT coupe.

Whetting the appetites (and warming the cheque books) of the suitably affluent, Bentley has released a teaser video today that offers little to see, but plenty to hear.

"Welcome to the new sound of Bentley - a stirring and thunderous soundtrack and the prelude to a potent new Bentley driving experience that begins in 2012," the Volkswagen-owned carmaker said in a statement.

Precise power and performance figures for Bentley's version of the 4.0 litre TFSI engine have yet to be revealed, but in Audi S6 form, the V8 churns out 309kW and 550Nm of torque (the latter coming online between 1400 and 5300rpm).

For now, the Continental GT is available with just the one king-of-the-hill engine: the 430kW, 700Nm 6.0 litre W12, which catapults the big coupe to 100km/h in just 4.4 seconds. That's BMW M5 time, for the record.
