Bentley will reportedly unveil the V8-powered 'entry level' version of its Continental GT coupe at January's Detroit Auto Show, a year on from the unveiling of the facelifted 2011 model.

Joining the Continental GT's more powerful range-topping W12 engine, the 4.0 litre V8 mill is described a 'high output' engine - but little else about the new powerplant is known.

Reports out of Europe suggest that two versions of the V8 engine will be offered, one using a single turbo to produce around 310kW, and the other benefitting from a twin-turbo arrangement to deliver around 415kW - just 8kW short of the W12 engine's output.

Performance figures for the V8 engine remain unknown. In W12 form, the 2011 Continental GT rockets to 100km/h in just 4.4 seconds - 0.4 seconds quicker than the pre-update model.

The new V8 is expected to be paired with a new version of the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission used by Audi, with the Continental's architecture getting an overhaul to accommodate the new gearbox.

Watch for more details to come out of Detroit in January.
