That’s the word out of the UK, as Auto Express reports Bentley CEO Wolfgang Durheimer hinted at a second, smaller SUV model when questioned on the issue at the Shanghai Auto Show.
Mr Durheimer speaks of a “fifth model line”, saying the carmaker would be interested in exploring the small to midsized SUV market once the Bentayga has been launched.
But Durheimer also left the door open for a production version of the recent EXP 10 Speed 6 concept, declaring the coupe to be the second of two lines of interest.
“We are a fairly small company and can’t have too many balls in the air at the same time,” Mr Durheimer said.
“It’s a fifth model line that’s very well defined here (with the EXP 10 Speed 6 concept) and it’s further SUV derivatives - they are our main two search criteria.”
Whereas the Bentayga is based on the MLB platform, shared with the Audi Q7, the report suggests a baby Bentayga could rest upon a new version of the MSB platform.
Bentley reportedly hopes to sell between 3000 and 4000 Bentaygas per year, in a bid to boost annual sales by almost 100 percent by 2018.
If successful, the carmaker may choose to follow the EXP 10 Speed 6 path instead of a second SUV, but a smaller SUV to complement the Bentayga could have sizable sales potential.
Meanwhile, expect the Bentley Bentayga to be officially unveiled at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, ahead of a sales debut in 2016.
