Bentley’s first-ever SUV has been officially revealed, with the covers coming off the Bentayga ahead of the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The unveiling follows leaked images of a scale model from China, and a teaser video from Bentley showing the Bentayga tackling the rough stuff off-road.

The appearance of the finished product will therefore surprise few, and has stayed more-or-less true to the EXP 9 F concept upon which it’s based using the same platform as Audi’s Q7.

Power in the launch model comes from a new 6.0 litre twin-turbocharged W12 petrol engine producing 447kW and 900Nm, matched with an eight-speed automatic and a permanent all-wheel-drive system.

The W12 can shift the Bentayga from 0-100km/h in 4.1 seconds, on its way to a top speed just beyond the 300km/h barrier at 301km/h. Combined fuel figure is 12.8 l/100km.

The AWD system can be optioned with Bentley’s Responsive Off-Road setting featuring eight driving modes, and the air springs can also be computer controlled with four ride heights available.

Inside, Bentley customers will find the usual handcrafted wood trim and lashings of leather, along with an options list covering the likes of seating configuration (four or five-seat layouts available) and stitching.

Bentley’s Mulliner Bespoke program vastly expands the options list, which now includes 15 leather trims, numerous alloy wheels options in 20-, 21- or 22-inch and no less than 15 carpet options.

Also not short on variety are the front seats, which can be adjusted electronically in 22 ways and offer six different massage settings, heating and ventilation.

Otherwise, there’s an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system with 60GB hard-drive, a choice of three audio systems with up to 18 speakers and a 10.2-inch Bentley tablet based on the Android system for rear passengers, which is removable.

Safety features include adaptive cruise control with ‘stop and go’ function, predictive cruise control, park assist and traffic assist.

“The Bentayga is truly the Bentley of SUVs,” Bentley CEO, Wolfgang Dürheimer, said.

“It redefines luxury in the SUV sector and offers a genuine Bentley experience in any environment, thanks to a combination of unparalleled attention to detail, go-anywhere ability and cutting-edge technology. “

First deliveries are expected to begin early next year, although timing for Australia is yet to be confirmed. Stay tuned for more news from the Frankfurt Motor Show.
