The results of a new study by research group Canstar Blue show that many Generation Y drivers are risking accidents by neglecting their tyres to the extent that have received a defect penalty.
Surveying 1012 car tyre customers across Generations Y, X and the Baby Boomer generation, the study found that 20 percent of Gen Y motorists have had their car defected for bald tyres.
By comparison, 11 percent of Gen X participants gave the same reponse, along with just three percent of Baby Boomers.
The survey also saw six percent of male respondents and 36 percent of female respondents admit to not knowing how to change a wheel on their car.
A study by the Victorian Automotive Chamber of Commerce (VACC) revealed similar results in 2009, with unsafe tyres making up 25 percent of issues with cars tested by VACC approved repairers.
