Audi’s New 1500km A3 Ultra Diesel Under Consideration For Australia

Audi has extended its Le Mans-proven 'Ultra' program into its production line, announcing a tweaked new A3 model that promises extra long hauls on one tank of diesel.

Entering as the company's most fuel-efficient model, the new A3 1.6 TDI Ultra lists fuel use at 3.2 l/100km, bettering the 3.9 of the regular A3 1.6 TDI, and even the 3.8 of the smaller A1 1.6 TDI. 

With a 50 litre fuel tank on-board, the A3 Ultra claims a driving range of more than 1500 kilometres. And, if you're not going for a record, Audi says the hatch can get you to 100km/h in a relatively spritely 10.5 seconds. 

The Ultra's extended driving range is courtesy of enhancements that include a 15mm lower ride height and a kerb weight reduced to 1205kg, a 75kg saving. 

There's also a longer final drive ratio, and Audi has wrapped the lightweight wheels in low rolling-resistance rubber. There's even sleeker S Line sills attached to the hatch's sides. 

Audi says more Ultra models are on the way, but for now, the A3 Ultra will go on sale in Germany from September in three- and five-door form.

Speaking with TMR today, Audi Australia's Shaun Cleary confirmed that the A3 Ultra is under consideration for Australia.
