Audi's most powerful diesel-fed V6 has just hit the UK market, landing in the form of the new 3.0 litre bi-turbo TDI engine.

Producing 230kW at 3900rpm and 650Nm of torque between 1450-2800rpm, the new mill will be offered in the sedan, Avant wagon and Allroad versions of the A6, along with the A7 Sportback.

The V6 engine features a two-stage turbocharger delivering boost pressure of up to 3.2 bar, while start/stop and energy recuperation systems are also featured.

Matched with an eight-speed automatic transmission and Audi's quattro all-wheel-drive system, the BiTDI engine propels the A6 sedan to 100km/h in 5.1 seconds, while the A6 Avant and A7 Sportback promise a time of 5.3 seconds.

In both A6 and A7 form, the diesel lists fuel consumption figures of 6.4 l/100km on the combined cycle.

As a bonus to those that prefer the aural delights of a petrol engine, Audi has also added a sound actuator which - in Audi's words - "imposes a defined oscillation pattern on the exhaust flow," transforming the sound into something closer to a high-performance petrol engine.

In Australia, the current top-shelf diesel in the A6 range is a 3.0 litre turbodiesel delivering 180kW and 500Nm of torque, with fuel consumption listed at 6.0 l/100km and the 0-100km/h run wrapped up in 6.1 seconds.

Speaking with TMR today, Audi Australia's Shaun Cleary said that there are currently no local plans for the new engine, "but like all models, it will be under consideration and we need to ensure it will work with our brand strategy".
