If you thought BMW's electric i3 city car looked a little unorthodox, say hello to the Audi Urban Concept. Shown here in a series of preview illustrations, the Urban Concept will make its debut at next month's Frankfurt Motor Show.

Although it doesn't bear the name, the Urban Concept is technically part of Audi's e-tron electric vehicle programme, drawing power from two electric motors.

Audi hasn't offered full details yet on the concept's powertrain, but it is likely that the motors are either mounted one at each axle, or inside two of the semi-open 21-inch wheels.

The wheels also hold brake-energy recuperation systems, increasing the lithium-ion battery pack's charge.

Like BMW's i cars, the Urban Concept features a carbon fibre-reinforced polymer body, built on an aluminium platform.

In the cabin, driver and passenger seats are molded into the body, and the driver can adjust the pedal and steering wheel positions to suit.

As for the oddly-spaced Caparo T1-like seats, Audi says the intent there is to ensure that both occupants are afforded plenty of space while giving the vehicle an incredibly narrow design.

It is unclear at this stage if Audi plans to put the Urban Concept into production, and it may yet preview either a return of the ultra-efficient A2, or another model in upcoming e-tron range.

Watch for the Urban Concept at next month's Frankfurt Motor Show.
