Audi has taken the covers off the most powerful TT RS ever to hit the streets, with the newest generation offering a spine-melting 294kW of power and 480Nm of torque from its 2.5 litre inline five-cylinder engine.

While the engine itself is shared with the RS 3, outputs have been pushed up by 24kW and 15Nm over the more practical five-door hot hatch.

Available as a coupe and roadster, the TT RS channels its new-found urge to quattro all-wheel-drive, via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission which comes with a close-ratio set-up for the lower gears.

Acceleration from 0-100 km/h takes an almost supercar-like 3.7 seconds in the Coupe, with the Roadster taking 3.9 seconds.

An RS-specific styling package sees new bumpers added front and rear, a fixed rear wing, unique 19 and 20-inch alloy wheels, twin oval tailpipes, and the addition of Audi-first OLED tail lights with a 3D design.

Inside, the interior comes dressed in carbon or aluminium accents, and ahead of the driver an R8-inspired steering wheel plays host to the starter button and drive select controller.

RS embossed quilted sports seats, and Bang and Olufsen audio, and an RS-specific version of Audi’s Virtual Cockpit instrument cluster are also featured.

European customers will be able to take delivery of the new TT RS later this year, but Australian customers will have to wait until 2017, with final pricing and specifications for Australia to be announced closer to launch.
