Audi has unveiled a new take on its popular Quattro showcar, revealing the new Sport Quattro concept bound for this month's Frankfurt Motor Show.

And, while Audi isn't saying, it's believed that this new coupe will go into production, slotting into the Audi line-up just below the R8 supercoupe.

Audi last taunted fans with the hope of a new sub-R8 model in 2010 when it celebrated the 30th anniversary of its legendary Ur-Quattro coupe.

This new Quattro is a good deal bigger than its predecessor, measuring 4602mm long to the earlier concept's 4280mm. The wheelbase has grown by 184mm, and the big coupe is wider too, measuring 1964mm to 1860mm.

As for power, the new Sport Quattro does away with the earlier model's 300kW 2.5 litre turbo five-cylinder engine, replacing it with a more powerful hybrid system.

In the new concept, you'll find a 411kW/700Nm 4.4 litre V8 mated to an electric motor producing 110kW and 400Nm.

All of this is matched to an eight-speed tiptronic auto, sending power to - of course - Audi's quattro all-wheel-drive system.

Audi says that while the V8 and the electric motor can motivate the car alone or together, the latter will see it rip out a 0-100km/h time of 3.7 seconds. Top speed? A handy 305km/h.

Acceleration from the standalone power systems hasn't been revealed, although Audi does promise a 50 kilometre driving range from the electric motor.

Weighing in at a hefty 1850kg, the Sport Quattro nevertheless promises a combined-cycle fuel consumption figure of 2.5 l/100km, with carbon emissions pegged at just 59g/km.

It's still unclear if Audi will put this new monster into production, but more than a few overseas reports have claimed the inside word on a green light.

We'll see.
