Audi's V8-powered S6 sedan and S7 Sportback have hit Australia. But, as with the A6 Allroad, these two come as limited-edition offerings.

Both produce 309kW and 550Nm of torque from their TFSI V8s. The S6, previously a V10, has downsized to the twin-turbo unit for its latest incarnation.

All four wheels are driven through Audi's quattro system, matched to a seven-speed DSG transmission.

Audi says the S6 will dash to 100km/h in 4.6 seconds, while the Sportback is a tick slower at 4.7 seconds. Both go on to a limited 250km/h.

The alloy powerplant features Cylinder on Demand (CoD) cylinder deactivation, coupled with stop-start. The CoD system drops the engine to four cylinders under light load to save fuel.

The engine is also fitted with a thermal management system that heats the engine to optimum operating temperature quickly by disconnect the water pump.

All of these measures mean both cars achieve 9.6l/100km, not bad for cars that tip the scales at around 2000kg.

Audi has tackled the acoustic problems usually presented by cylinder deactivation with an active noise control system that blanks out unpleasant sounds using phase shifting and active engine mounts.

Both models come with 20-inch wheels, adaptive air suspension, digital TV, electric boot opening and closing, heads-up display, LED headlights, quattro sports diff and S Sport front seats (the S7's rears are also S Sport).

Naturally, both cars are five star Euro NCAP performers, with eight airbags, stability and traction control, ABS, tyre pressure monitoring, parking sensors and reversing camera.

Both cars can be fitted with adaptive cruise, active lane assist, blind spot monitoring and park assist, all available as a $6300 option.
