Audi boss Rupert Stadler has confirmed that the German automaker isn't looking at bringing out a sub-A1 model, ending rumours that the company was set to create its own subcompact based on the Volkswagen up!.

Interviewed by British mag car, Stadler says the A1's strong sales and healthy profit margins indicate that the company already has the right mix of models at the small end of the segment, and that there was no need to insert a new model below the A1.

However, while contending the bottom end of the market was well catered for, Stadler said that Audi was giving serious thought to an extra-large SUV to sit above the existing Q7.

"We want to expand the SUV side of the business," Stadler told car.

"By 2020, our Q-models will account for over 45% of sales."

But while the Q7 is already a mammoth machine, voices within Audi say there's room to go even bigger still. So many voices, in fact, that Audi has already trademarked the Q9 name.

With rivals like the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class (below) and the upcoming BMW X7, a bigger SUV is exactly what Audi will need to stay in the hunt.
