Last week it was the S3 hot-hatch, and now Audi's stove-hot new RS 6 Avant wagon has made its Australian debut.

Revealed in December, the RS 6 makes its official sales debut in October, but Audi says it has already taken a number of orders for the hyper wagon.

The new hero is priced from $225,000, putting it at the top of the Audi RS range. Take the (rather big) leap beyond this one, and you're straight into the $279,500 R8 in Audi's growing performance range.

Mechanical Package

The 2014 RS 6 is driven by the company's twin-turbo 4.0 litre TFSI V8, replacing the 426kW bi-turbo 5.0 litre V10 of the previous model.

Power from the new engine is rated 412kW and 700Nm. Peak power arrives between 5700 an 6700rpm, while top torque is available btween 1750 and 5500rpm.

Matched with all-wheel-drive and an eight-speed auto, Audi promises a 0-100km/h time of 3.9 seconds.

Average fuel use is listed at 9.8 l/100km, marking a 30 percent reduction compared to the V10 model.

The V8 is also equipped with 'Cylinder On Demand', shutting down cylinders two, three, five and eight when the engine is under intermediate load.

The whole thing rides on 20mm variable air suspension, although Sports Suspension Plus with Dynamic Ride Control is offered as an alternative option.

Handling is also enhanced through a liberal use of aluminium - 20 percent of the body's construction - along with high-strength steel.

In all, the new RS 6 is around 100kg lighter than its predecessor.

Braking is managed by 390mm discs and six-piston calipers at the front, but 420mm fibre-ceramic discs are also available.

Standard features include LED headlights and rear lights, a tire-pressure control system, illuminated entry sills and the custom driver-information system.

Also on board are the parking system plus, cruise control, three-zone automatic air conditioning, MMI navigation plus with MMI touch and the 10-speaker Audi sound system.

There's also no shortage of pricey options:

Dynamic Package - $4,900

RS Sport suspension plus with Dynamic Ride Control (DRC)
Dynamic Steering
Top speed electronically limited to 280km/h

Dynamic Package plus - $25,840

Ceramic performance brakes
RS Sport suspension plus with Dynamic Ride Control (DRC)
Dynamic Steering
Top speed electronically limited to 305km/h

Carbon styling package - $8,500

Radiator grille and frame in high-gloss black
Funnel-shaped air intake in carbon, with quattro logo in titanium grey
Roof rails in matte black
Front sill in carbon
Rear diffuser insert in carbon
Front air intake in high-gloss black with diagonal struts in carbon
Door mirrors matched to body colour

Assistance Package - $10,375

Night vision assistant that highlights pedestrians
Audi active lane and side assists with adaptive cruise control incorporating stop & go and pre-sense plus
Park assist

A new feature in the RS menu of the DIS is the shift light. Green segments are illuminated as revs increase, turning red and blinking when revs approach the red line.

On the styling front, the RS 6 Avant continues the styling evolution introduced by the RS 4, pushing the design further with a new front bumper and a nested-frame grille design.

The rear is standard RS fare however, with a subtle diffuser flanked by the familiar elliptical exhaust tips.
