UPDATE: New exterior images added to gallery, via autoforum.cz

Audi has used the world's biggest gadget fair to reveal the interior for its next-generation A3, which is expected to make its full debut at March's Geneva Motor Show.

Revealed at the Consumer Electronics Show today, the cutaway cabin marks the first official appearance of the new A3's insides, following spy photos published on TMR in November.

Importantly, the dashboard display shown at the event also revealed the first look at the new three-door A3's exterior styling.

As expected, the new A3 will take much of its design inspiration from the A3 Sedan Concept revealed early last year, including the sharp new headlights and strong character lines.

On the inside, there's little here in the way of surprise: not only did our spy photos reveal the bulk of the 2012 A3's cabin details, but its design is largely identical to the A3 Sedan Concept.

Among the few standout differences are the different colour scheme, the black dash switches replacing the concept's silver units, and the simplified air-conditioning controls below.

A conventional gear shifter replaces the button and dial automatic transmission of the sedan concept. The interior door panels are also largely identical to their concept counterparts, differing only in colour and stitching.

Features destined for the new A3's cabin include a new electric parking brake and a new take on Audi's Multimedia Interface, including a screen that rises out of the top of the dash.

The cabin shown at CES also offers a (strictly concept only) multiple head-up display system.

The front occupants are provided with their own unique displays, with both offering digital travel guides, along with news and images from video telephone calls.

There's also a third central head-up projection which is visible to all occupants, which the driver or front passenger can use to transfer data from their own display to this central shared view point.

Watch for the new A3 to make its global debut, in hatch and sedan form, at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
