Audi has set a new Nürburgring lap record for wholly electric-driven production vehicles this week, blasting around the Nordschleife in the soon-to-be-released R8 e-tron for a lap time of 8:09.099.

Behind the wheel was race driver Markus Wankelhock, fresh from his victory in the Nürburgring 24 Hour race driving a (petrol-powered) Audi R8 LMS ultra just weeks ago.

The record-setting R8 e-tron closely mirrors the production version due by the end of the year, but with its speed-limiter set at 250km/h rather than the 200km/h destined for production.

Wankelhock also recorded a best time of 8:26.096 with the 200km/h speed limiter in place.

Audi has now confirmed that this production spec will include outputs of 230kW and 820Nm from its all-electric drivetrain, with a 0-100km/h acceleration figure of 4.6 seconds.

The R8 e-tron’s rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack will provide a range of up to 215km from 49kWh of stored energy.

Recent records for electric-driven vehicles have also been set by Peugeot and Toyota, however both used prototype vehicles not intended for street use.
