Audi's new A3-based Q3 will make its debut at this month's Shanghai Auto Show, the German carmaker has confirmed.

Details for the new compact have yet to be revealed, although it is expected to ride on a modified version of platform used by the Volkswagen Tiguan

Among its engine options, the Q3 is expected to draw power from a trio of Volkswagen-sourced petrol engines and a single diesel engine, with more choices to join the line-up after launch.

Performance is expected to be much sharper than its nearest Volkswagen cousins - Audi describes the Q3's driving characteristics as "supremely sporty".

It is already known that the Q3 will be built at SEAT's plant in Martorell, Spain, with production capacity for around 80,000 units each year.

The smallest SUV in the Audi line-up, the Q3 will join the mid-sized Q5 (built in Ingolstadt, Germany) and the larger Q7 (built in Slovakia).
