Audi Australia last night took the wraps off its stylish not-so-small Q2 SUV. And if style is the solitary measure, this one is going to be a monster... it looks terrific.
Sitting on the same wheelbase as the larger Q3, but 20cm shorter thanks to shorter overhangs, it is surprisingly spacious inside - more like a small wagon in fact - and offers 405 litres of boot space, rising to 1050 litres with the rear seats folded.
Importantly, and a little unusually, it has a style all of its own. That latter point is significant; you won’t mistake this Audi for any other Audi.
What sets it apart is the raked ‘flattened’ roofline, the contrasting C-pillar blades and that stylish chamfered ‘slice’ running from the A-pillar along the tops of the doors.
The C-pillar blades are customisable, they are seen here in contrasting ‘Manhattan Grey’, but can be ordered in a range of contrasting colours, or body-coloured.
As you can see from these photos (if a little unclearly... it’s dark), legroom is good, so too headroom.
The dash is typical Audi: an optional ‘virtual’ display sitting under a sports binnacle and configurable any way you’d like (large map, smaller map, technical readouts, large dials, smaller dials) and a second screen above the centrestack.
It’s appealingly geeky but practical, and, as in the TT and other Audi products, simply the best driver display in any car of this type.
Standard gear on the Q2 will be variable rack progressive steering, premium connectivity functions, side traffic alert, rear cross-traffic assist, rear view camera, auto cruise control (up to 200km/h), autonomous emergency braking up to 85kmh (which will apply brakes and steer if the driver doesn't react), head-up display and ambient lighting in ten different colours.
That price above, $41,100 (plus on-road costs) applies to the entry model 1.4TSI petrol FWD. Also to be launched February next year is the Quattro AWD 2.0 litre TDI diesel with 145mm of ground clearance. Later in the year we can expect to see a 140kW 2.0 TSI petrol Quattro join the range.
Though pricing is not available for the up-spec models, Audi assures us the range will top out at “definitely below” $59k.
The new Audi Q2 is available to order now; see your Audi dealer soon as global demand is expected to be high.
