Audi has confirmed that it plans to "enter a new market segment" with the long-rumoured Audi Q2 compact SUV, with the smaller companion to the Audi Q3 slated to make its debut in 2016 - most likely at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

But beyond a statement of intent, there are few other details as to what to expect from the Q2.

Even what platform it will be built on is sketchy. While many new models in the Volkswagen Group have transitioned to the MQB/MLB scalable architectures, the Audi A1 - which is expected to be the basis for the Q2 - won't make that move until 2017 when an all-new model arrives.

However the current-gen A1's PQ25 platform could still do the job, given its ability to accommodate an all-wheel drive driveline for high-spec versions. A chopped-down version of the Q3's PQ35 platform is also a possibility, should MQB be unsuitable.

The Crosslane concept of 2012 (pictured) may provide some pointers on what the production Q2 could look like, though styling is still a closely-guarded secret

That's not all for Audi SUVs in 2016 either. The automaker has also confirmed that it will display the second-generation Audi Q5 medium SUV this year, providing a box-fresh replacement for one of its most popular models.

A showroom debut for that car isn't expected until 2017, however.
