With the inevitable ‘bracket creep’ in carmaking comes new models to fill the thinning classes below, and rumours suggest Audi is planning a new micro car model.
Newer generations of the carmaker’s A1 and A3 models continue to grow (as enforced by the people who buy them and demand ever-increasing interior space), and for this reason, Audi is now reportedly looking to build a new model to be positioned in the range below the A1.
The UK’s Autocar quotes unnamed Audi sources who say the new model will sit on the Volkswagen Group’s New Small Family (NSF) front-wheel-drive platform, and will be available in both three- and five-door body styles.
A 1.0 litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine, most likely from the Volkswagen up!, will be joined by an all-electric unit on the list of available powerplants - most likely from the e-up!.
Both diesel and hybrid versions have reportedly been ruled out, but a higher-riding all-wheel-drive Allroad version (like the A1 Quattro, pictured, top of page) could follow the initial launch models at a later date.
