Audi’s range of TDI diesel powerplants is about to receive an almighty performance boost, if reports out of the US are to be believed.

But rather than wind up the wick on any existing four-cylinder units, the German carmaker is reportedly looking to new ways of improving performance and efficiency.

The first is the ‘no substitute for cubic capacity’ method - in this case, Audi’s 283kW/850Nm 4.2 litre twin-turbo V8 diesel.

This engine is offered in the A8 luxury sedan, and Car And Driver reports it will be replaced with a new eight-cylinder engine, set to be unveiled at the Vienna Engine Symposium in April.

The new powerplant will lift the V8 TDI’s power figure to well over 300kW, but torque may remain stable or even fall to around 700Nm.
