The premium EV market is set to heat up over the next decade, with the likes of BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen all pushing their respective electric projects.
Audi, a part of the Volkswagen Group, declared late last year that it is aiming to lead the premium EV segment by 2020 with its 'e-tron' range of electric vehicles.
Te German luxury carmaker has this week revealed a prototype version of the A5 e-tron quattro plug-in hybrid, which pairs a 157kW TFSi 2.0 litre petrol engine with a 35kW electric motor.
The petrol engine and the electric motor both drive the front wheels, but what of the 'quattro' name?
In the case of the A5 e-tron prototype, all-wheel-drive is accomplished thanks to a second electric motor driving the rear axle with an additional 60kW and 300Nm of torque.
The electric motors also have the ability to recover brake energy, topping up the lithium-ion battery pack, which can also be recharged through a home mains outlet.
Fully charged, the battery pack will also allow the A5 e-tron to drive up to 65km on electric power alone, at speeds up to 100km/h.
For now, the A5 e-tron quattro is only a prototype, but as Audi pushes to dominate the alternative-energy market, expect this technology to appear in future four-ringed cars.
