Audi will reportedly unveil two new plug-in hybrid e-tron models in the coming months, with a production A3 Sportback variant expected in Geneva, and an A6 Sportback concept at Frankfurt in September.

According to German mag AutoBild, the long-awaited A3 e-tron will reach production in Sportback guise, and will be capable of travelling 50km on electricity alone.

Its hybrid drivetrain is expected to be similar to that found in the existing Q5, A6, and A8 hybrid models available internationally, with a 20kW electric motor aided by a 157kW 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine.

Unlike Audi’s existing hybrid models (which use the eight-speed ZF torque converter auto), the A3 e-tron will reportedly use a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The A3 e-tron will be the first production Audi to use plug-in technology, with an eight kWh lithium-ion battery system expected and charge capability from a standard powerpoint.

Pricing is expected to be around €35,000 (AU$44,000), representing a €8000 (AU$10,000) premium over a non-hybrid A3 Sportback.
