Audi has released details and images of a new A3 e-tron concept, ahead of its official debut in Geneva next month.

This latest e-tron concept uses a plug-in hybrid drivetrain to deliver fuel consumption of just 1.5l/100km and CO2 emissions of just 35g/km, according to European plug-in hybrid standards.

Specifically, the system includes a 110kW version of Audi’s 1.4 litre TFSI petrol engine, connected via clutch to a disc shaped 75kW electric motor for combined outputs of 150kW and 350Nm.

This clutch arrangement is tuned to make the most of the two power sources' relative power bands, with the electric motor doing much of the work up to 2000rpm, and the petrol motor optimised for 1750-4000rpm.

Power is then sent to the front wheels via an e-S tronic six-speed dual clutch transmission, to deliver a claimed 0-100km/h time of 7.6 seconds and top speed of 222km/h.

Each power source is capable of providing drive independently, and can hit 130km/h in pure-electric mode with a maximum range of 50km.

Audi’s press material makes no mention of the A3 e-tron’s power storage system or charge characteristics, but all is likely to be revealed at its Geneva appearance.
