The first of Aston Martin’s next-generation supercars is expected to appear in 2016, but reports this week suggest the company is still undecided on a name.

According to the UK’s Autocar, Aston Martin design boss Marek Reichman has at least confirmed that the famous ‘DB’ prefix will continue.

“But what number will follow that is yet to be decided,” Reichman told the website.

As a replacement for the DB9, one might reasonably expect the new model to be known as the DB10. But, with Aston having already skipped ‘DB8’, the company is clearly not beholden to any linearity.

“We skipped a number last time to try to emphasise what a big step the new car was,” Reichman said.

He added that the technological and styling leap of the coming new model will be every bit as significant, suggesting the company could again skip a number - or skip the idea of numbers all together. (DBX, anyone? - Ed.)

Earlier reports have suggested that factions within Aston Martin’s management and owner group are resistant to the ‘DB10’ name, and some are understood to prefer the continuation of the ‘DB9’ name.

Whatever the new model’s name, we can expect significant changes in every other department.
