Aston Martin fans are waiving their Union Jack flags as the carmaker confirms that its new manufacturing plant will be built in the UK.

St Athan in Wales is the chosen site for the new facility, which will eventually build Aston Martin’s new crossover model.

The announcement will likely kill-off rumours of a future plant in an offshore location, such as the US or Easter Europe, at least until after 2020 when production is due to commence at the new factory.

The first sod of soil is set to be turned at the Wales location next year, which will span around 90 acres.

“Through a detailed evaluation of over 20 potential global locations for this new manufacturing facility, we were consistently impressed with the focus on quality, cost and speed from the Welsh Government team,” Aston Martin CEO, Andy Palmer, said.

“As a great British company, we look forward to St Athan joining Gaydon as our second centre of hand-crafted manufacturing excellence.”

The plant’s construction will provide employment for around 1000 Brits between now and 2020, with around 3000 jobs on offer once the facility is operational.

A new plant and the crossover model forms part of Aston’s £200 million investment plan, announced in 2015, as is the new DB11 sports model which is set to begin production later this year.
