The Aston Martin Cygnet. Ostensibly designed to give Aston owners the opulence they're familiar with in a city-car package, it also represents the company's efforts to comply with the EU's fleet-average emissions laws next year.
Now, a report in Britain's car magazine claims that the Toyota iQ-based Cygnet will also become Aston's first electric vehicle, utilising technology already planned for an electrified iQ in Japan and Europe.
While Toyota's iQ EV will make its debut sometime in 2012, Aston's more bespoke Cygnet EV reportedly won't arrive until the following year.
The 'regular' petrol-powered Cygnet is motivated by the same 72kW 1.3 litre litre engine as the iQ, driving the front wheels via a CVT automatic gearbox.
Speaking with car, Aston Martin boss Dr Ulrich Bez said that while he has doubts about the benefits of hybrid powertrains and KERS-like systems in his company's cars, an electrified Cygnet would be "a shoo-in."
"We believe there is a market for an urban runabout which is easy to park and very economical yet almost as well appointed as a Vantage," Dr Bez said.
