UPDATE: Mercedes-Benz Apple CarPlay photo gallery added.
The technology giant says CarPlay will give drivers a “smarter, safer and more fun way to use their iPhones in the car”.
CarPlay essentially hijacks the car’s “native” infotainment system to display Apple icons and functions, controlled by the touchscreen.
The new system also allows drivers to use maps and messaging functions, along with accessing their music collections and using Siri, all using voice commands through an expansion of the current Siri Eyes-Free function.
The mapping service can even anticipate a driver’s intended destination using data from recent trips, contacts, emails and text messages.
“CarPlay has been designed from the ground up to provide drivers with an incredible experience using their iPhone in the car,” Apple’s Greg Joswiak said.
“iPhone users always want their content at their fingertips and CarPlay lets drivers use their iPhone in the car with minimized distraction. We have an amazing line-up of auto partners rolling out CarPlay, and we’re thrilled it will make its debut this week in Geneva.”
Apple CarPlay will soon be available as an update to iOS 7 and works with Lightning-enabled iPhones, including iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c and iPhone 5.
