Rumours of the demise of the Apple Car project are growing stronger by the day, as the global tech giant appears certain to pull the pin.
Bloomberg reports that the car dubbed Project Titan by Apple has been “drastically scaled back”, with hundreds of employees informed that they are no longer required.
Apple has made no secret of its endeavours into the field of self-driving cars, but the ‘Apple Car’ expected to eventuate from the research has been far more secretive.
And now, it appears Apple (like others) is realising just how much red tape is involved in designing a car from scratch, with the report quoting evidence from anonymous parties said to be close to Project Titan.
Around 1000 people are believed to have been involved in the project. Aside from those who were shown the door, others have chosen to leave voluntarily with the remainder assigned to other Apple programs.
The autonomous car research may not be wasted, as Apple may instead decide to team up with an established carmaker, but the tech team has reportedly been given around 12 months to prove the project’s worth.
One such partner could be Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, with company boss Sergio Marchionne, stating publically on more than one occasion that Apple is a company with which he would like to align.
Apple has also left the door open to reignite Project Titan or a similar program, but this most recent decision suggests such a move would have no timeline.
Google, Apple’s main rival, has also experienced shortcomings in its endeavour to build an autonomous car, but Google’s program is far more advanced than Apple’s. Even so, Google has also expressed an interest in working with an established carmaker.
