A new round of crash safety testing has seen top scores with the Australasian New Car Assessment Programme handed down to Mitsubishi’s upcoming new Triton.

Also impressing in the latest round was the new Land Rover Discovery Sport, Renault’s compact Captur and the high-tech Tesla Model S.

BMW’s i3 also locked in a 5-Star rating, although the 2 Series Active Tourer and the Cooper three-door of its MINI brand both failed to achieve top marks. Both came out with 4-Star ratings.

The Triton’s new 5-Star rating will be a welcome award for Mitsubishi, opening the door to fleet sales that have been off-limits to the current 4-Star range.

The Triton achieved a score of 15.22 out of 16 in the frontal offset crash test and top marks in the side impact and pole tests.

Standard safety kit across the Triton range includes dual front SRS, side and curtain airbags and a driver’s knee airbag.

Advanced seat belt reminders are fitted to all seats across its Single, Club and Double Cab model range, along with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA).

A reversing camera will also be standard with some models and an option with others.

The Triton’s score applies to all variants, including all cab styles, engines, transmissions and drive configurations.

Full pricing and specification details for the new Triton will be revealed later this month with its Australian market debut.
