ANCAP 5 Stars: Civic Hatch, CX-5, 3 Series; Mahindra XUV500 Gets 4 Stars

The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) has announced top safety scores for a trio of new models today; Mazda's segment-leading CX-5, the new BMW 3 Series and Honda's new Civic Hatch.
Mahindra's upcoming XUV500 SUV has also featured in the organisation's latest round of tests, achieving a "creditable" 4-Star result.
Mazda CX-5, BMW 3 Series, Honda Civic Hatch
Based on analysis from recent Euro NCAP testing, ANCAP has approved top 5-Star ratings for the CX-5, BMW's 3 Series and the new Civic Hatch.
Applying specifically to the all-wheel-drive diesel model, the CX-5's 5-Star score is based on standard equipment that includes (among others) six aibags, ABS, electronic brake-force distribution, electronic stability control and seabelt reminders at all seats.
Safety Assist, Blind-spot Monitoring and Lane Departure Warning are also available as an option for the up-spec Grand Touring variant.
The MAZDA CX-5 scored 14.1 out of 16 in the offset crash test. The passenger compartment held its shape well. There was a moderate risk of serious leg injury for the driver. The vehicle scored 16 out of 16 in the side impact crash test and a further two points in the pole test.
The 3 Series picked up a 5-Star score, based on tests of the 320d Sedan model. Introduced in Australia in 2012, the 3 Series' standard features include six airbags, ABS, electronic brake-force distribution and ESC, along with seatbelt reminders at all points.
The BMW 3-Series scored 15.76 out of 16 in the offset crash test. The passenger compartment held its shape well. There was a slight risk of serious leg injury for the driver and passenger. The vehicle scored 16 out of 16 in the side impact crash test and a further two points in the pole test.

Honda's Civic Hatch, which goes on sale in Australia next month, has been awarded a 5-Star rating, with safety specifications shared across European and local models.
Standard safety features include six airbags, ABS, electronic brake-force distribution and ESC, along with seatbelt reminders at all points.
The Civic Hatch scored 15.03 out of 16 in the offset crash test. The passenger compartment held its structure well. There was a slight risk of serious chest and leg injury for the driver. The vehicle scored 16 out of 16 in the side impact crash test and a further two points in the pole test.

Mahindra XUV500
Launching in Australia next month, Mahindra's first locally-delivered SUV, the XUV500, has achieved a 4-Star ANCAP safety rating.
Standard safety features include six airbags, ABS, electronic brake-force distribution and electronic stability control.
Demonstrating the gap between 4 and 5 Star ratings however, the XUV500 performed poorly in the the offset crash test.
The XUV500 scored 10 out of 16 in the offset crash test. The passenger compartment lost structural integrity. Protection from serious leg injury was poor for the driver due to excessive rearward movement of the brake pedal.
The vehicle scored a default score of 16 out of 16 in the side impact crash test.
