Mercedes-Benz Australia's newly launched B-Class hatch and Valente people mover have both picked up five-star ANCAP safety ratings this week.

Tested by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program's Euro NCAP sister organisation, both cars were awarded the top rating based on data drawn from the European tests.

B-Class

Applying to all variants, the B-Class hatch's five-star rating is based on its standard safety features and an almost flawless score in crash testing.

In the offset crash test, the B-Class scored 15.78 out of 16, with only a slight risk of injury for the passenger. The car scored 16 out of 16 in the side impact test, and two (out of two) points in the pole test.

Standard safety features include Antilock brakes (ABS), electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD) and electronic stability control (ESC) are also standard. Intelligent seat belt reminders are fitted to all front seats. Several other advanced safety features are available.

Valente

Applying to all four-cylinder Valente models (which is all that is offered at this stage), the Valente's five-star rating comes from its 12.78 score in the offset crash test, and 15.87 in the side impact test.

Two points where achieved in the optional pole test, which was performed in Australia by ANCAP.

Dual front airbags, side airbags and head-protecting side curtains for the front seats are standard equipment with Australian models.

Antilock brakes (ABS), electronic brake distribution (EBD) and electronic stability control (ESC) are also standard. Intelligent seat belt reminders are fitted to both front seats.

The front seat belt buckles are mounted on the seats and the upper anchorages are adjustable. These features improve the fit of the seat belt.

Pretensioners are fitted to the front seat belts to reduce slack in the event of a crash. Three point seat belts are fitted to all rear seats.

A reversing camera is not fitted as standard, although it is available as an option with the $4490 Satellite Navigation package.
