The flagship model in Alfa Romeo’s upcoming SUV range could deliver more than 370kW, according to reports out of the UK this week.

The new SUV, rumoured for more than five years and finally confirmed in May, is expected to debut sometime between 2016 and 2018.

Now, a report with Britain’s Auto Express claims the top model in the range will draw power from a turbocharged petrol V6, producing “up to 500hp”.

Such a model would give Alfa a handy rival to the likes of Porsche’s 294kW Macan Turbo that hit Australia in May.

A diesel performer is also expected, delivering around 260kW and eclipsing the 230kW offered with Audi’s SQ5 SUV.

Less powerful volume-selling models are also expected, and an larger SUV - rivalling the Volvo XC90, Audi Q7, Mercedes-Benz GL and BMW X7 - is also planned to follow.

All are expected to ride on a new rear- and all-wheel-drive architecture that will boast a 50:50 weight distribution.
