Alfa Romeo’s first-ever SUV, the midsized Stelvio, will soon have three ‘entry-level’ models in its range with the trio detailed by the Italian carmaker ahead of the Geneva Motor Show.

Joining the range-topping Stelvio Quadrifoglio, which debuted at the LA Auto Show last year, will be the self-titled Stelvio, Stelvio Super and Stelvio Business.

Alfa Romeo stresses that its new SUV is worthy of the Alfa name, capable of “a thrilling driving experience” even while traversing the famed mountain pass bearing its name from Italy into Switzerland.

Power for European markets comes initially from a choice of two turbocharged four-cylinder engines, including a 206kW 2.0 litre petrol-powered unit and a 2.2 litre diesel making 155kW.

All-wheel-drive is offered on all models, along with a mechanical self-locking rear differential, and lightweight materials including aluminium and carbon-fibre help to keep the kilograms down.

Later, a 147kW 2.0 litre turbo-petrol engine and a 132kW 2.2 litre turbo-diesel will join the range, with the latter also available in rear-wheel-drive. All engines are matched only with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

With the 206kW petrol engine under foot, the Stelvio can hit 100km/h from rest in 5.7 seconds, which Alfa says is a best-in-class time.

The Stelvio is 4680mm long, 1670mm high and 2160mm wide, and buyers in some markets at least will have the choice of 13 paint finishes and no less than 13 alloy wheel designs ranging in size from 17- to 20-inch.

Safety features include Integrated Brake System (IBS), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), and Forward Collision Warning (FCW) with autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and pedestrian detection.

Inside, depending on the model, buyers will find leather seats, real woodgrain trim, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and an Alfa Connect infotainment screen in either 6.5- or 8.8-inch sizes.

There’s also dual-zone climate control and a Harman Kardon audio system with eight, ten or 14 speakers.

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio is due to arrive in Australia next year, with local pricing and specifications yet to be determined. Stay tuned to TMR for more.
