Alfa Romeo’s plan to build seven new models before 2018 appears to be in full swing, with the Italian carmaker believed to have already commenced work on three of those models.

According to industry paper Automotive News Europe, the first three offerings from the ‘reborn’ Alfa Romeo - now expanded to eight new models - will be the long-awaited BMW 3 Series fighter, a midsized SUV and a new flagship sedan.

We say 3 Series fighter, but if reports are to be believed, the first new model may have grown into a 5 Series fighter as development progresses.

Further evidence of a rethink comes from the new model’s name, with the Giulia name associated with the model until now reportedly replaced with ‘Project 952’ by Alfa insiders.

Whatever the name, the new midsized sedan is reportedly on-track for its scheduled 2016 debut in Europe, with sales in the US to begin late in the same year.
