Just in time for summer, Alfa Romeo has announced the local arrival of the roofless version of its carbon-bodied 4C sports car.
Although at a premium of $10,000 over the coupe, it is the only mid-engined drop-top available for less than $100,000.
And, unlike many de-roofed versions of other sports cars, the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider's transition from hardtop to convertible doesn't come at the expense of performance.
Its kerb weight is just 10kg more than the coupe, and it'll run from zero to 100km/h in a coupe-matching 4.5 seconds. Top speed is an identical 258km/h, and both Spider and Coupe will decelerate at 1.25G and hold up to 1.1G of lateral force in cornering.
Only one stat suffers - fuel economy. Even so, the extra weight and drag of the Spider only sees it gain 0.1 l/100km in fuel consumption, for an average of 6.9 l/100km on the combined cycle.
The powertrain is the same 1.7-litre turbocharged inline four as the Coupe, which produces 177kW at 6000rpm and 350Nm from 2200rpm and sends it all to the rear wheels via a six-speed twin clutch gearbox.
Thanks to its low 1035kg kerb weight, the Spider is also able to forgo power steering, instead boasting a manual steering rack with a fast 15.7:1 steering ratio.
Alfa's familiar DNA multi-mode selector also features, allowing the driver to toggle between Dynamic (sport), Natural (normal), and All Weather (snow) modes, with an extra Race mode and launch control function thrown in for track day junkies.
The feature list is also similar, though the Spider eschews the Coupe's spider-eyes headlamps in favour of more conventionally lensed bi-xenon lamps. The roof is a manually-removed targa panel - no motorised top here.

Venture into the options list, and the 4C Spider's price tag starts to swell. Any paint colour besides Alfa Red or solid white attracts a premium paint surchage, with Modena Yellow costing an extra $1000, Basalt Grey costing $2000 and Madreperla White and Competizione Red coming in at $3000.
And if you want coloured brake calipers, that'll cost you an extra $1000 too. Fancy red or brown leather seats? Fork out $2000 please.
Four optional wheel designs are available besides the standard set of 17/18-inch staggered alloys, with a dark silver version of the standard design costing an extra $2000.
A Bi-Colour pack adds red leather seats and red constrast trim in the cabin for $3000, while a Carbon and Leather pack brings a leather-clad upper dashboard plus carbon fibre mirror cover, centre tunnel trim and instrument panel surround.
Serious enthusiasts may opt for the Racing Pack, which brings a unique set of 18/19-inch alloys, racing suspension, sports exhaust system and ultra-grippy Pirelli track tyres. It will add $10,000 to the retail price, however.
