The production version of Alfa Romeo’s 4C concept will hit the roads sooner than expected, according to recent reports.
UK magazine Autocar reports that the model is likely to surface in mid-2013, at least six months earlier than previously expected.
First shown in concept form at last year's Geneva Motor Show, the production 4C is expected to form the ‘halo’ car for Alfa’s return to the US market in 2013.
The US relaunch is expected to be strengthened by the upcoming 159-replacing Giulia sedan.
While technical specifications of the 4C are yet to be revealed, this latest report also suggests that the car will use the concept's existing carbon-fibre construction, rather than the recently-reported SMC material.
Power for the concept is delivered by a 150kW turbocharged 1.75 litre four-cylinder engine, although it is possible that Alfa's new 1.8 litre engine - capable of up to 235kW - could provide motivation for the production model.
If the production car manages to maintain the concept’s 850kg kerb weight, the model promises acceleration in the vicinity of a 5.0 second 0-100km/h figure, if not quicker.
Production is tipped to be limited to just 20,000 units, with the possibility of 10,000 Spyder versions to follow.
There has been no mention of right-hand-drive production at this stage, but rest assured, TMR will let you know if there’s any chance of a local future for the 4C.
