To say that Honda's fourth-generation Legend is due for retirement would be an understatement.

Despite a mid-life makeover in 2009, the big sedan has been on the scene since 2004, making it one of the oldest cars you can still buy brand-new.

This week however, Honda's luxury arm Acura has confirmed a New York debut next month for its new top-shelf model, the RLX.

Replacing the current RL, the new Acura is likely to follow in the footsteps of its predecessors by utilising the Legend platform, suggesting that a replacement for Honda's flagship sedan will not be far behind.

As with the new Civic-based ILX and unlike past iterations of the RL, the brand-new RLX is expected to get its own unique skin, setting it apart from the already luxurious Legend.

Details for the new model are thin on the ground, although it is likely that Honda's new Earth Dreams 3.5 litre petrol V6 will headline the engine options, paired with the new electric Super-Handing All-Wheel-Drive system.

Earlier reports also point to unnamed Acura executives promising BMW 5 Series-like handling dynamics, with interior space closer to the larger 7 Series.
