Audi is preparing to enter the plug-in hybrid SUV arena in Australia with its Q7 e-tron after first introducing it in Europe in 2015.

Set to arrive locally in January 2018, the Q7 e-tron will slot into the German brand’s range just below the V8-powered SQ7 as an image leader for the regular Q7 lineup.

Priced from $139,900 plus on-road costs, the Q7 is slightly more expensive than its chief rivals like the $118,500 BMW X5 40e and the $124,900 Mercedes-Benz GLE 500e.

While those two plug-in hyrbid alternatives pair a petrol engine with electric assistance, the Q7 e-tron uniquely matches a 3.0-litre turbo diesel V6 with an electric motor integrated within its eight speed transmission.

Outputs from the V6 engine tally 190kW and 600Nm while the electric motor provides 94kW and 350Nm to bring the combined output figure up to 275kW and 700Nm, allowing the big Audi to complete the 0-100 km/h sprint in a claimed 6.2 seconds.

Official fuel consumption is rated at 1.9 l/100km with a 17.3kWh battery pack providing enough power for a claimed 56 kilometres of range, plus a fully electric top speed of 135km/h and the ability to reach 60km/h in 6.5 seconds without requiring assistance from the diesel engine.

Those figures are in line with the claimed maximum electric range of its competitors, and should allow the average Aussie motorist to complete their work commute, school runs and general errands on battery power alone.

The maximum claimed range from both the electric and diesel power systems results in an impressive 1320 kilometres total range

From a standard wall outlet a completely discharged Q7 e-tron would take around 10 hours for a full charge, or around 2.5 hours with stronger electrical infrastructure in place.

Standard safety features for Australian-bound Q7 e-trons will include autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection, active cruise control, lane assist blind spot monitoring, and a semi-self-driving traffic jam assistance feature.

Other standard equipment will include an 8.3-inch high-definition infotainment display, 4G LTE connectivity, premium stereo, a digital virtual cockpit display, heated front seats, adaptive air suspension, LED headlights, and 19-inch wheels.

Unlike other members of the Q7 range, the e-tron goes without a seven-seat interior layout, instead offering seating for five with the extra electrical equipment required for the hybrid drive system occupying the space usually used by the third row seats.
