The next step in the expansion of the Volkswagen family of SUVs will arrive in the shape of the 2017 Teramont - that’s the name adopted by the production version of the 2013 CrossBlue concept.

The three-row Teramont, captured by Auto Sina, will go into battle against family favourites like the Hyundai Santa Fe and Toyota Kluger, slotting into the Volkswagen range between the smaller Tiguan and the plush, but five-seat only, Touareg which is likely to push further upmarket in its next generation.

From the spy photos the Teramont appears to adhere to the bluff styling of the CrossBlue concept, with features like the chunky squared-off wheel arches, and twin-bar grille left in place.

There are changes to the original concept's head and tail-lights; the Teramont switches to more production-friendly items, and the concept’s interior, while still recognisable, loses some of its more advanced elements.

The Teramont won’t be the first Volkswagen Group three-row SUV however, with the related Skoda Kodiaq to be revealed in Europe ahead of the Teramont’s North American focussed debut.

Under the bonnet, the Teramont is expected to arrive with a range of turbocharged four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, while a petrol V6 is expected for the range topping model.

Dual clutch transmissions are expected to be the default choice, with a choice of front, or all-wheel-drive available depending on the model. Further down the track, Volkswagen is also expected to introduce a range of hybrid powertrain options as part of its move towards electrification.

While the vehicle pictured is likely to be a version destined for the Chinese market, the North American Teramont isn’t expected to differ greatly.

Australian buyers looking for a seven-seat SUV may have to wait however, with no confirmed right-hand-drive production for the Teramont at this stage.
