Volkswagen’s head office in Wolfsburg, Germany has officially confirmed a major update for the Golf range is scheduled for next month.

That’s it officially at this stage.

However word on the street suggests it’s a major upgrade and Wolfsburg will announce it as the eight-generation Golf model.

Look for a 48V petrol-electric hybrid drivetrain based on a new turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder powerplant.

European reports suggest Volkswagen’s ‘mild’ hybrid uses the starter motor as a generator and assistance to the engine comes via a belt linking the starter motor/generator (housed in the transmission case) to the crankshaft pulley.

Recovered energy also powers a small electric motor-driven supercharger which provides extra performance even from low engine speeds.

And all new Golfs will likely ride on an updated and simplified version of the MQB platform and some reports point to a revised steering system to counter criticism of the current model.

Inside, expect anew infotainment system with gesture control, a digital instrument cluster and head-up display.
