Toyota has boosted the appeal of its midsized RAV4 SUV, with new standard features and the option of additional safety tech in some models for the 2017 model-year.
Eight of the ten Rav4 variants are now available with a safety pack which includes autonomous emergency braking, as the options list for the entry-level GX (but only when optioned with an automatic transmission) now aligns closer to the GXL and top-spec Cruiser models.
GX buyers can also choose a dual-tone paint finish as an add-on, once they have selected the optional safety pack. This adds silver accents to the wheel arches, door sills, side mirrors and bumpers.
The safety pack is priced from $3800 in the GX, and includes forward collision warning with autonomous emergency braking, active cruise control, lane departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beam and wipers along with front parking sensors and a sway warning system while towing.
The $3800 price-tag also includes several features from the up-spec GXL, including satellite navigation, digital DAB+ radio, a 4.2-inch colour multi-information display, upgraded instrument cluster and a revised front bumper which includes front fog lights.
GXL models now score standard satellite navigation, ToyotaLink mobile connectivity and a DAB+ digital radio. The safety pack is priced from $2500 for the GXL, and adds blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert.
Buyers can still option the upgraded paint finish for the GXL (for $1000), which includes black trim for the headliner and pillars.
At the top of the range, Cruiser all-wheel-drive variants with either petrol or diesel power gain ambient lighting in the foot-wells along with a two-position memory function for the leather-clad electric driver’s seat.
Styling is unchanged for 2017, with Toyota sticking by the styling refresh first introduced late last year.
Also unchanged is the engine line-up, kicking off with the 107kW/187Nm 2.0 litre petrol unit for 2WD (FWD) variants before stepping up to 132kW/233Nm 2.5 litre petrol and 110kW/340Nm 2.2 litre diesel units. All engines are four-cylinder.
Front-wheel-drive petrol models are available with either a six-speed manual or CVT automatic, while AWD petrol models are six-speed auto-only. Diesel models are all six-speed with AWD, and a manual can only be optioned with the base-model GX.
For 2017, two GXL variants previously offered with manual transmissions have been deleted.
Prices have risen for 2017 to reflect the new standard kit, up $560 for the 2WD GX 2.0 litre manual through to $1560 for the AWD GXL diesel automatic. Toyota’s capped-price servicing is included, priced at $180 per service for up to three years or 60,000km (up to six schedules services).
