Toyota has outlined a long list of changes to its LandCruiser 70 Series workhorse, targeting safety, engine performance and comfort.

As outlined yesterday, the bulk of the changes were aimed at boosting the LC70’s safety rating through the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).

And the update has duly delivered, with ANCAP awarding single-cab variants the maximum 5-star safety rating. Dual-cab variants are yet to be tested with the revised safety package.

That safety package includes a larger and stiffer chassis frame, more airbags, new front seats, a passenger seatbelt reminder and 12 revised body panels.

There’s also traction control, electronic stability control, hill-start assist, brake assist with brake-force distribution and cruise control.

Even the wheel and tyre package is arguably safer, with the previous split-rim steel wheels replaced with single-piece 16-inch wheels on WorkMate variants. For the first time, these models will use tubeless tyres.

Otherwise, the 2017 LandCruiser 70 Series also brings an upgraded 151kW/430Nm 4.5 litre turbocharged V8 diesel engine that improves fuel economy by up to 10 percent - now 10.7 l/100km.

A diesel particulate filter is a new addition for 2017, and the LC70 gets taller gear ratios in second and fifth for its five-speed manual gearbox.

Underbody changes have necessitated the introduction of a single 130-litre fuel tank in some variants, while others continue with the twin 90-litre setup.

The 2017 models retain their maximum payloads, while the 3500kg tow rating is also unchanged.

And Toyota has not forgotten about the LC70’s biggest fans, with additions for 2017 including a new fuse box with ten spare fuses for easier (and safer) electrical add-ons (think driving lights and winches).

Toyota says its engineers in Australia took the lead on development for the updated model with help from Toyota in Japan. More than 100,000km was covered during testing - 70 percent of which was off-road.

"These extensive engineering and specification updates guarantee the future for the LandCruiser 70 Series and its unrivalled combination of reliability, towing, payload and off-road ability," Toyota Australia’s Tony Cramb said.

"For more than 30 years, miners, farmers, governments and many other users have turned to the go-anywhere 70 Series to traverse the most inhospitable terrain and complete the toughest jobs.”

Mr Cramb said the efforts of local and overseas engineers has ensured the 70 Series can continue to deliver for its customers, as anything less may have seen the model deleted from the range in the face of ever-tightening emissions laws and safety requirements.

“The only alternative was to walk away from this model - and that was not an option," Mr Cramb said.

Of all the LC70s sold around the world, one-in-five is purchased in Australia. But improvement also brings higher prices in some cases, with prices rising by between $3000 and $5500.

The 2017 Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series is on sale now, backed by Toyota’s capped-price servicing plan at $340 per service for the first six services, three years, or 60,000km.
