The first shipment of Suzuki’s all-new Swift light hatch has arrived in Australia ahead of the new model’s official debut next month.
Based on Suzuki’s new Heartect chassis architecture which also underpins the larger Baleno hatch and smaller Ignis crossover, the new Swift promises to keep overall weight low to the benefit of fuel economy and handling.
Suzuki Australia is yet to officially confirm specifications for the new Swift, but looking at the brand’s recent launches a two-tier model structure seems likely. Overseas the Swift offers a choice of either a 66kW 1.2-litre naturally aspirated four cylinder engine, or a 82 kW 1.0-litre ‘Boosterjet’ turbocharged three cylinder engine.
As Suzuki’s best-selling model for 2016 the new Swift plays an important role in the local line-up, with the outgoing Swift securing a fourth-place finish in the light car sales race to the end of 2016, behind the Hyundai Accent, Mazda2, and Toyota Yaris but ahead of cars like the Holden Barina, Ford Fiesta, and Volkswagen Polo.
